Talk Rodeo to Me
A Quick Guide to the Language of Rodeo…
If you’re heading to the rodeo this month, you might hear a whole lot more than cheering and country music. Rodeo has a language all its own—part tradition, part grit and a whole lot of swagger.
Here’s your cheat sheet so you can sound like you’ve been riding bulls since birth (or at least know what’s going on):
Rank
Nope, not a smell (well… sometimes). In rodeo, a rank animal is one that’s especially tough to ride—strong, unpredictable and a real challenge.
Riggin’
The handle cowboys use to stay on a bronc. Think of it as the difference between holding on… and flying off.
Spur Ride
Judges don’t just score staying on. Riders have to spur—that rhythmic kicking motion that shows control and style.

Eight Seconds
The longest eight seconds of your life. That’s how long a rider has to stay on to score.
Stock
The real athletes of the rodeo—the bulls and horses. And yes, they have reputations.
Draw
Luck of the draw matters. Riders randomly get paired with an animal—and that matchup can make or break a ride.
Chute
The narrow gate where riders and animals start. High tension, low space, big energy.
Bullfighter
Not a matador. These are the fearless pros who distract the bull to protect fallen riders. (Honestly, some of the bravest people in the arena.)
Pickup Man
The cowboy on horseback who helps bronc riders safely dismount after their ride. Smooth, fast and absolutely essential.
Mutton Bustin’
The cutest chaos you’ll ever see—kids hanging on to sheep for dear life. Crowd favorite, every time.
