What is the mission of Rescue Ranch?
To rescue and nurture homeless dogs of all breeds and help them find loving homes.
How did Rescue Ranch get started?
Rescue Ranch was founded in 1993 by three retirees who wanted to give back to their community. In April 2000, it became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, Rescue Ranch facilitates 500 to 600 dog and puppy adoptions each year.
What types of animals do you care for?
On average, Rescue Ranch cares for about 270 homeless puppies and dogs from local city and county shelters, owner surrenders and high-risk shelters. Dogs vary in size, age, health and behavior, but they all share one thing in common: the need for a loving home.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as an animal rescue organization?
Three of our biggest challenges are funding, kennel space and enrichment time. Rising costs for food, veterinary care and supplies continue to increase operating expenses as we care for more dogs than ever before. As rescue numbers grow, kennel space becomes more limited, making it difficult to provide every dog with adequate room to run, play and rest. Daily enrichment is also essential. Caring for 270 dogs requires a dedicated team 365 days a year, and providing the attention, exercise and socialization each dog deserves can be challenging with limited staff.
What advice would you give someone considering adopting a rescue animal?
Patience is key. Rescue dogs need time to adjust, and understanding the 3-3-3 Rule can help. During the first three days, dogs are often overwhelmed and decompressing. By three weeks, they begin learning routines and testing boundaries. After three months, most feel at home and begin showing their true personality.
What is one way the community can support Rescue Ranch today?
Donating is the best way to support our mission to rescue, nurture and rehome the dogs in our care. Beyond financial support for food, medical care, spay/neuters, vaccines and deworming, we urgently need kennel supplies, fencing, surface materials and sheltered sleeping enclosures. Donating your time is also key. Volunteer as a weekend office assistant or help with events, kennel assistance, dog walking, puppy enrichment, dish washing or fostering.
What partnerships have been especially meaningful to your organization?
Rescue Ranch relies heavily on community and donor partnerships. Veterinarian services from Dr. John Whiting, Dr. LeAnn Ahlbrech and Dr. Amy Fousek are vital to the health of all our animals. We also partner with Meghan’s House, which facilitates multiple programs including youth training teams, school education assemblies, dog rehabilitation and rehoming, children’s library reading programs, foster programs, rescue-to-rescue transfers, community outreach and local adoption events.
What role do volunteers play in your organization?
Volunteers are the heart of Rescue Ranch. They transport dogs, provide foster homes, walk and socialize animals, assist with grooming, support administrative programs and staff the Rescue Ranch Thrift Store. Their time and dedication help prepare dogs for successful adoption while supporting nearly every aspect of our organization.
