Warm Hearts, Cold Noses

Simple Ways to Keep Pets Merry and Safe…

From wagging tails under the tree to cats curled by the fire, pets add a special kind of joy to the season. The pace picks up in December, which can be exciting for them and a little overwhelming. A few small tweaks help everyone settle into the glow.

Keep décor pet wise. Skip tinsel that’s tempting to chew. Tie ornaments with ribbon instead of hooks. Anchor the tree so curious climbers don’t topple it, and tuck cords where paws can’t tangle. Candles look lovely, but place them high and never leave them unattended.

Mind the menu. Chocolate and xylitol are dangerous. So are grapes and raisins. Rich holiday foods can upset stomachs, so share safe treats or set aside a small plate of pet-friendly nibbles.

Create a quiet retreat before guests arrive. A bed, water, and a favorite toy signal that this spot is theirs. Short breaks in that space help anxious pets reset when the door keeps opening.

Cold weather calls for care. Dry paws after walks and watch for ice melt on sidewalks. Senior pets and short-haired breeds may need a sweater outside. Make sure collars fit and tags are current in case someone slips out during the bustle.

As the year winds down, add a few moments that are just for them—a slower walk, a game on the living room rug, a long stroke behind the ears. Joy multiplies when our four-legged family is calm, comfy and close. •
